Eketahuna German Literature Society – a poetry collection

Curated and translated by Cordelia Black and Robbie Ellis.

It started with a few text messages between friends. It expanded into a popular daily web publication, followed by tens of people who live at the intersection of New Zealandisms, German-speakery, literary mindedness, and Became Weird.

On the left-hand pages are 75 of the most beloved poems of the public domain German-language lyric verse tradition, faithfully reproduced in the original.

On the right, you will not find the conventional translations. Rather, two Kiwis take the ideas and themes of a couple of dozen Germans (with some Austrians and Swiss thrown in), pull their words and ideas to bits and shunt them round the back in place. The results are new poems in New Zealand English that are unique as.
