The Shadow World by P.C. Laird

Based on the killing, In February 2003, a young Japanese student was murdered by his fellows at an Auckland academy for overseas students.

Shadow worldThirteen men were accused of murder and granted bail. Most of the witnesses (students and staff) and the dead student’s parents, left New Zealand and refused to return to give evidence so murder charges were replaced by manslaughter.

Of the thirteen charged (nine of who had the victims blood on their clothes) four took responsibility and were sentenced. The academy, used as a ‘dumping ground’ for students who did not fit in at home, was closed. Told through the eyes of four young people drawn together out of ‘need and loneliness’, this is a fictionalised account of the event.
