Linda Hansen spent her early years on a dairy farm in the Bay of Plenty and lists cows and cats amongst her favourite animals. She writes for adults and children and was very pleased to win the 2012 Jack Lazenby Children’s Writing Award for her story ‘Socks’.
For the past ten years she has also worked as a storyteller, telling tales in schools, rest homes and in other places. She remembers what it felt like being scared in front of an audience when she first started out.
Linda wrote ‘An Unexpected Hero’ because she feels it is important that the ‘other’ story be told about what happened to many New Zealanders after the First World War began in 1914.
