Richards, Lila

I’m Lila Richards, author of dark fantasy with Bluewood Publishing, and sub-editor with the New Zealand Meteorological Service. I live in the city of Auckland, New Zealand, where I share my home with my cats, Poppy and Jeeves. When I’m not writing or working, I read eclectically, sew and embroider, dote on my five beautiful grandchildren, and collect things, my current favourites being owls, vintage paraphernalia and old books.

From time to time, I enter the Middle Ages via the Society for Creative Anachronism (an international medieval re-creation group), where I transmogrify into a ninth-century smallholder’s widow from the west of Ireland, and have attained the rank of Baroness. More recently, I’ve also been spotted out and about in the 1930s and 1940s.

I’ve been a storyteller virtually since I learned to write, making up stories each night to help my handicapped elder sister get to sleep. I wrote my first novel at the age of eleven. For many years, as an adult, I fell prey to depression, and forgot about writing, taking it up again in my forties. About seven years ago, I was diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome, a type of high-functioning autism, which finally made sense of both my life and my depression. And I’m in good company! Famous people with Aspergers include: Mozart, Einstein, Andy Warhol, David Byrne of Talking Heads, and musician Gary Numan.

Perhaps this also accounts for my fascination with vampires. To me they seem, in many ways, to be the ultimate outsiders – neither truly dead nor truly alive, no longer quite human, yet having to pass for human, and forced to perform an act deemed evil in order to survive. Not to mention the blood – horrendous… yet strangely enticing!

My first vampire novel, A Different Hunger, was published by Bluewood Publishing in October, 2011, and is available both in print and as an e-book from Bluewood, Amazon, or Whitcoulls Online.

My second vampire novel, Restitutions of the Blood, was published early in 2013.

My third novel, Vicious Circle, is a crime detection novel in which the detectives are panel members of a radio programme dealing with the paranormal, who use their own psychic abilities to help them solve the crime. It will be out SOON from Bluewood Publishing.
